Oncology Advanced Practice Providers On-Boarding Program.

Hop On-Board With APPOS!

As a leader tasked with “on-boarding” advanced practice providers who are new to oncology, you may find that resources to quickly and effectively get these clinicians up-to-speed in your practice are scarce, inconsistent and dated. Let’s work together to design and develop tools that can help you in this role.

Currently, APP Oncology Summit offers a live, virtual 2.5-day course that will address a variety of “basics” that APPs need to know. From next generation sequencing, to cancer therapies, to managing solid and hematologic malignancies, to counseling patients and family on end-of-life care, Oncology 101 is our flagship resource for APPs entering oncology. Current and comprehensive, this course will provide APPs with the foundational knowledge they need to provide support and care to cancer patients as part of the multidisciplinary oncology care team. More information is available here.

For those unable to participate in this live event, we have captured the proceedings of our previous on-boarding course, which can be accessed here.

Volunteer On-Boarding Leaders Needed!

APP Oncology Summit is looking for 8 – 10 volunteers to serve on our On-Boarding Committee. Here’s what it entails:

  • serve a 12-month initial term as a committee member
  • participate in video conference calls to “brainstorm” the design and development of new on-boarding resources (we’ll send you an UberEats voucher so you have fuel for the discussion!)
  • volunteer to champion those resources that interest you most, potential examples include:
    • presenting at future courses in your area of expertise
    • writing articles about on-boarding challenges and successes
    • creating short-form videos on “Short Cuts” that simplify seemingly daunting tasks like coding and note taking
    • serving in hands-on “How To” workshops like bone marrow biopsy procedures
    • creating print drawdowns and patient education pieces to guide your new APPs in various aspects of their day-to-day practice
  • establishing criteria and evaluating nominees for New APP of the Year to be awarded at APPOS Honolulu at the end of each year.

Other ideas for new resources include an Oncology 102 course, monthly dinner meetings on topics to be determined by the Committee, Mentorship programs, and whatever else the Committee finds useful and practical!

Committee members will receive a modest stipend for your time, complimentary registration for you to any APP Oncology Summit meeting, as well as to other educational events hosted by our parent Horizon CME, group discounts for on-boarding activities and events for your APPs, and provide support for any Committee tasks undertaken by members.

For interested APPs who are not seated in the On-Boarding Committee, additional opportunities exist serving on Focus Groups and Research Panels, Sub-Committee roles discussing deeper issues in specific areas (e.g. tumor types), Editorial Contributors to the on-boarding blog that highlight the “lessons learned” from best practices as well as “horror stories” during the on-boarding process, some of which will be including in the nationally-distributed The Oncology Connection newsletter.

Join us to be the first to access on-boarding tools and resources and to learn from and share with your fellow APP leaders!
