Approach to the Anemic Patient

Overview

During this activity, participants will review the basic science of red blood cells and anemia, the important aspects of patients’ physical symptoms, medical history, and lab values that are associated with an anemia diagnosis. Expert faculty will discuss differentials related to anemia by using patient cases and clinical concepts as an example.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize the definition of anemia and basic science of the red blood cell (RBC)
2. Discuss the key aspects of a patient’s history, physical and laboratory evaluations with regards to an anemia diagnosis
3. Describe a systematic approach for identifying differential diagnoses related to anemia using application based patient cases and clinical concepts
