Difficult Conversations and End of Life Care

Overview

During this interactive session expert faculty will guide attendees into key elements and strategies in communicating difficult news to patients and their families, including standardized approaches in initiating these conversations and how to respond to emotion. 

Learning Objectives.

  1. Describe key factors in communicating difficult news 
  2. Identify skills to improve your communication with patients and families 
  3. Recognize that emotional cues need to be satisfied PRIOR to knowledge-based communication
  4. Employ “SPIKES” as a talking map for communicating bad news 
  5. Practice using a “warning shot” and a “headline/summary” 
  6. Apply “NURSE” skills to respond to emotion
